Trial Musings 8: Captain Jack Throws Harlow A Life Preserver

It looks like former Harlow client John Ryan was first up on the witness stand today.

Pro for the prosecution: Ryan tells the court of a jail visit to Harlow, where Harlow feeds him the "I smelled smoke and ran" story.

Con for the prosecution: "Ryan told the jury that Kerekes was the more dominate person in the relationship, and learned Kerekes had assaulted Cuadra."

Neutral, but just plain funny/sad: Ryan donated $7000 to the Harlow Defense Fund. A fool and their money...

Net win for defense here I'd say. The ball is getting closer into field goal range for their "Stockholm Syndrome" explanation for Harlow's role in this murder. I suspect this'll happen more and more throughout the week, as these former clients are called to the stand. I wonder if the prosecution is wise to be doing so? It would be better to force the defense to call these guys I would think, and then cross-examine them. Oh well, we'll see what happens...

Does anyone know if Harlow will testify?

BB, could you post that comment in TM7? Thanks!

There's actually a rumor afoot that he will. That he'll be the defense's only witness in fact.

I don't know though; this seems almost to good to be true, from the prosecution's perspective.

It's entirely possible he'll take the stand if and when we go to a death penalty phase, however, to basically plead for his life.

This was just posted by the Times Leader:

"In a six page letter Cuadra drafted to Martin on Oct. 12, 2007, Cuadra wrote 'The Plan' which included obtaining attorneys who could tell a good story."

So the "leaked" letter was a part of the prosecution's case all along, and was presented to the jury today. No harm, no foul!

Sure, no problem. I brought it up here coz a lot of those 'things' happened here.

Also, it says Renee testified for only 30 minutes, even though Melnick advised the judge she would be on "for a period of time." Hmmm, sounds like they may have changed their plans for some reason.

You don't say! :-)

Gotta take another of those real-life breaks, folks...be back in an hour or so (so, don't panic if post does not go thru right away).

Wow. No Renee bombshells to cause grief. Not a shocker.
