Petrov Gets 20 Years

J.C. Adams has the story.

What's interesting here is comparing this to the sentence Joe got (and Harlow offered): Life w/o parole. Both incredibly brutal attacks, however... On one hand, Petrov got a much lighter sentence, 20 years (with a possibility of parole even earlier?). OTOH, Petrov's elderly victims didn't die (they only had their skulls bashed in with a hammer).

In addition, he'll be deported to Armenia after finishing his sentence.

What is worse, spending 20 years in a Florida prison or being deported to Armenia afterwards, not knowing what Armenia will be like in 20 years and having a Slavic surname?

Him being "connected" made sure he did as light as stint in the slammer as possible.

I would be willing to bet the charges against Petrov included the phrasing "with aggravating circumstances" or some variation. That would explain the less severe sentencing. Very clearly, the elderly couple were brutally assaulted. I do remember reading that Petrov was strong-armed into this by a person with leverage over Petrov. Perhaps, Petrov, as a recent immigrant, may have owed someone for part of his passage from Armenia to the United States and assaulting the couple was to be the payback. Who knows? In any event, it is a horrendous crime. Twenty years is the right sentence for the assault on the elderly couple and, coupled with deportation, looks more like a "life sentence" for Petrov.

Forgive me for going off topic, but CC just sent me this, which I think everyone might enjoy: "Is Mason Wyler a Train Wreck or What?"
